Curly hair texture

Hair transplant technique

Afro Hair Transplant

A graft extraction and implantation plan adapted to tightly curled hair and its curved follicle structure.

In Afro-textured hair, the hair curves not only above the skin but beneath it as well. This makes extracting the follicle intact during graft harvesting more delicate. In an Afro hair transplant, the choice of punch tip, the extraction angle and the handling of grafts are adapted to this structure. Because curly hair naturally covers more of the scalp, the density plan may also be approached differently.

Dermatoscope
Step 01

Consultation

The curvature of the follicles, skin thickness and any history of keloids are discussed. Where necessary, a few test grafts may be taken from the donor area to assess the course of the follicle.

Step 02

Planning

The hairline and recipient areas are drawn. The density plan takes into account the coverage that curly hair provides.

Step 03

Procedure day

Grafts are carefully extracted with a tip and angle suited to the curve of the follicle. Channels are opened and the grafts are implanted following the direction of the curl.

Step 04

The first 10 days

Washing and moisturising instructions are given according to your hair type. Braiding, tight styles and chemical straightening should wait for the doctor’s approval.

Step 05

12 months

The scabs come away in the first weeks; between months 1 and 3 some of the transplanted hairs may shed temporarily. New growth generally begins after month 3–4 and becomes noticeable around month 6; for most people the final appearance is assessed at around 12 months. Timings vary from person to person.

FAQ

Questions about this procedure

Is FUE possible with Afro hair?
It may be planned for suitable patients using a tip and technique adapted to the follicle structure. Suitability is assessed at the examination and, where needed, with test grafts.
When can I have my hair braided?
The doctor will suggest a time for tight braids and styles based on how you are healing; waiting a few months is generally advised.
I am prone to keloids — what should I do?
Be sure to mention this on the online assessment form and at your consultation; the doctor may recommend an additional assessment.
